1) Tell us about a time this past semester that you failed -- whether in this class, or outside of this class. Don't spare any details! It'd be even better if there was something you tried several times this semester, and failed each time.
The failure that stands out for me this semester would have to be not doing well in my first exam in a different class. I wasn’t as focused and did not put a lot work into learning the material like I should’ve and it caused me greatly; and it is not how I wanted to start the semester out.
2) Tell us what you learned from it.
I can’t make any excuses for what happened. I needed to own it, suck it up and move forward. I knew that I couldn’t take the course lightly and needed to put a lot more work and figure out where my weakness was when it came to understanding the material being presented.
3) Reflect, in general, on what you think about failure. Failure is hard, isn't it? It's embarrassing, sure, but it also means that we have to change something about ourselves. Talk about how you handle failure (emotionally, behaviorally). Finally, talk about how this class has changed your perspective on failure -- are you more likely to take a risk now than you were four months ago?
When I fail at something I try really hard not to dwell on it because it won’t help me in the long run to be depressed about the situation. Instead I try to turn it around and figure out what I did wrong, work on improvement or doing it differently so that I won’t fail again. This course does take you out of your comfort zone, puts you in situations you wouldn’t ordinarily put yourself in (i.e. videos and interviews with total strangers) which is what would happen if you were to make contacts with other in the industry you are trying to get into, and in a way you put yourself out there to make moves that you wouldn’t on your own had you not taken this course, which makes you take more risks.
Hello Joselyn,
ReplyDeletethe fact that you don't waste time dwelling on your failures is very admirable because it's not easy. What is easy is to let failures get the best of you, but sometimes it can be so devastating that it's like it's not even a choice. Although a poor exam grade is definitely something to get upset over, you must've felt comfort in knowing that it was just one exam, and that it (hopefully) doesn't reflect your final grade. How do you feel you would react to a more life-altering failure?
I have done the same thing in classes where I just did not get off on the foot I wanted to. It makes it hard to rebound and have a good semester. I think it is excellent you can honestly evaluate your failures and what you could have done to better succeed. You can read my blog post about celebrating failure at http://entreprenuerintraining.blogspot.com/2016/04/normal-0-false-false-false-en-us-x-none.html.
